Since Tenerife is an island roughly the size of Saaremaa, many Estonian visitors prefer renting a car instead of joining organized tours. A rental car gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace and discover places that are difficult to reach otherwise. There are many car rental companies in Tenerife, and both prices and rental conditions vary significantly. To help you avoid unpleasant surprises and unexpected costs, here are a few important tips.
Choose a Rental Company with Full Insurance
We strongly recommend choosing a rental company that offers full insurance with a €0 excess (deductible).
When collecting your vehicle, it's easy to overlook a small scratch or minor damage. Likewise, parking in narrow streets or crowded car parks can easily result in a small dent or scratch. Having full insurance helps you avoid unnecessary disputes and unexpected charges when returning the vehicle.
With most rental companies, you are responsible for paying the excess if new damage is found. Companies that typically include €0 excess insurance in their standard rental price include Orlando, Cicar, and Pluscar.
For many other providers, the excess usually ranges between €300 and €500, although it can sometimes be much higher. Always check the excess amount before signing the rental agreement. A high excess does not necessarily mean you're renting an expensive vehicle—for example, a Volkswagen Golf may still have an excess of €3,500.
Travelling to Other Canary Islands
If you plan to take your rental car to another Canary Island, make sure to check with the rental company in advance.
Not all companies allow their vehicles to travel between islands without additional insurance or special permission. Companies such as Cicar and Pluscar, for example, generally allow travel to islands including La Gomera, El Hierro, and Gran Canaria.
Age and Driving Experience Requirements
Most rental companies in Tenerife do not rent vehicles to drivers under 23 years of age or to those who have held a driving licence for less than one year.
There are exceptions. For example, Goldcar offers a young driver programme for customers aged 19 and over who have at least one year of driving experience. If you choose Goldcar, it is advisable to read recent customer reviews carefully, as some customers have reported delays in receiving their security deposit after the rental period.
A newer option for younger drivers is Amovens (https://amovens.com), a peer-to-peer car-sharing platform. Drivers must be at least 21 years old and have two years of driving experience to rent a vehicle.
Additional Drivers, Mileage and Payment
Some rental companies allow you to add an additional driver free of charge. The second driver must meet the same age and driving experience requirements as the primary driver. Companies offering this service include Cicar, Oasis, and Pluscar.
It's also worth checking whether there is a daily mileage limit. Whenever possible, choose a company offering unlimited mileage, such as Cicar, Jocar, Oasis, or Pluscar.
Most rental companies accept credit cards only and do not accept cash payments. In addition to the rental fee, a security deposit or excess amount is usually reserved on your credit card and released after the vehicle is returned.
Cicar is one of the exceptions. When collecting the vehicle, you simply pay the rental fee and leave a €50 fuel deposit in cash. This deposit is refunded when you return the car with the fuel level matching that at collection. No credit card or additional security deposit is required.

Airport and Hotel Delivery
Many rental companies offer vehicle delivery directly to the airport, your hotel, or your accommodation. However, always check whether an additional fee applies for this service.
We recommend booking your rental car at least two weeks in advance, although earlier is always better. Booking early gives you a much better chance of securing your preferred vehicle with your preferred rental company.
It is common for companies with the best prices and conditions to sell out well in advance. Occasionally, your online booking request may initially be accepted, but you may later receive an email informing you that the selected vehicle is unavailable for your chosen dates. Some travellers have had to contact several rental companies over several days before successfully finding an available car, even when booking two weeks ahead.
Fuel Policy and Traffic Fines
Most rental companies operate either a full-to-full fuel policy or require you to return the vehicle with the same fuel level as when you collected it.
If you forget to refuel before returning the car, the rental company will usually charge both the cost of the missing fuel and an additional service fee, which is typically deducted from your credit card.
The same applies to any traffic fines incurred during your rental period, such as parking violations or speeding offences. These fines are forwarded to the rental company and then charged to the renter according to the rental agreement.
